The market for Swiss & Austrian food & drink in Turkey

Austrian food & drink in Turkey enjoys impressive growth

Right now, Austrian agricultural exports are on a roll. In 2017, they grew globally by over 7% for a total of €11 billion. Momentum has been building across the decade – and this is reflected in Austrian food and drink exports to Turkey.
Such shipments grew 16.7% between 2015 and 2016, data from the MIT Atlas of Economic Complexity reveals. Monetarily, they hit a total of $110.8m.
So, what is at the forefront of these exports? Below are Austria’s top five export products to Turkey for 2016:
Flavoured & mineral waters - $34.1m
Cereals - $6.61m
Processed fruits & nuts - $3.12m
Cheese - $2.35m
Chocolate - $1.5m
From the top, flavoured waters and packaged, mineral waters are enjoying a popularity burst in Turkey right now. More Turks are living busier lifestyles than ever before, meaning they want to pick up packaged options while on the move. Total consumption comes to around 4.8bl litres a year – and the beverage market is expected to grow 4.9% from now until 2021.
Elsewhere, cheese and chocolate are notable products (pay attention Swiss exporters!).
Confectionery in Turkey is extensive; a market worth $3.5 billion with imports valued at around $130.9m. 70% of total imports are chocolate products. That’s because there is no local production of cocoa in Turkey. Raw ingredients are shipped in, but there is an increasing trend towards full finished products, like chocolate bars.
Turkey imports over $25 million worth of cheese against a backdrop of $90 million total dairy products. Cheese itself enjoys a close, healthy relationship with Turkish consumers. It’s a part of everyday breakfasts, seen as essential towards enjoying a health, balanced wellbeing.
Imported options are enjoying increased demand too. Tourism, a major industry in Turkey, is recovering after some poor performing years. This means foreign foods, designed to satiate homesick travellers, are being imported in larger quantities. Cheese is one such product.

Swiss food has strong potential in Turkey

Swiss producers mirror their Austrian cousins in that top products are very much in-demand by Turkish consumers right now.
For example, Switzerland’s top two food and drink exports to Turkey in 2016 were flavoured and mineral waters and chocolate. The top five looks like:
Flavoured & mineral water - $17.9m
Chocolate - $5.38m
Butter - $4.36m
Coffee - $3.61m
Hazelnuts - $1.78m
From here, it’s obvious to see the sectors that Swiss producers can do well in – especially packaged flavoured waters, chocolate, dairy products – and even nuts.
